"I"

As I began thinking where to start, where to focus on, how to frame and when to click, something tore at me deep inside my head. I drowned myself in the mists of confusion that surrounded my thoughts. The globe is warming up, the consequences of which will inevitably surface on the land on which I live, and I began searching for reasons. From within the boundaries of my comfort zone, I pointed my lens toward the ‘Other’, to find factors responsible for breaking the balance and harmony of nature which led to the changing climate. Is it because of the industries? Or the insane pace of so-called developments? Wars? The plague of greed, melting ice, deforestation? Or is it “I” who contribute towards the destruction of my own existence? Hence, “I” turned “My” camera towards myself, shedding light on a hidden icon that we carry secretly within each of us. “I”, who is archetypal and metaphoric. “I”, who wants to have the freedom to consume, to have power and wealth, to be one with my own indulgence. “I”, who wants to separate the self from nature so as to be distinctive and superior, only to transform everything into mine, and mine alone.

What is a zine anyway (thanks Wikipedia…)

A zine (an abbreviation of the word fanzine, or magazine; pronounced /ˈziːn/ “zeen”) is most commonly a small circulation publication of original or appropriated texts and images. More broadly, the term encompasses any self-published work of minority interest usually reproduced via photocopier on a variety of colored paper stock.

A popular definition includes that circulation must be 5,000 or less, although in practice the significant majority are produced in editions of less than 100, and profit is not the primary intent of publication.

Zines are written in a variety of formats, from computer-printed text to comics to handwritten text (an example being Cometbus). Print remains the most popular zine format, usually photo-copied with a small circulation. Topics covered are broad, including fanfiction, politics, art and design, ephemera, personal journals, social theory, single topic obsession, or sexual content far enough outside of the mainstream to be prohibitive of inclusion in more traditional media. The time and materials necessary to create a zine are seldom matched by revenue from sale of zines. Small circulation zines are often not explicitly copyrighted and there is a strong belief among many zine creators that the material within should be freely distributed. In recent years a number of photocopied zines have risen to prominence or professional status and have found wide bookstore and online distribution. Highly notable among these are Giant Robot, Dazed & Confused, Bust, Bitch (magazine) and Maximum RocknRoll.

The term was foremost used in seventeenth century France originally for the management of the household or domestic stock, but later primarily for an aristocratic or royal animal collection. The French-language “Methodical Encyclopaedia” of 1782 defines a menagerie as an “establishment of luxury and curiosity.” Later on the term referred also to travelling animal collections that exhibited wild animals at fairs across Europe and the Americas.

MAXWELL- A NEO SOUL _LEGEND

Drawing his greatest inspiration from the concept of the R&B auteur (looking to artists like Marvin Gaye, Prince, Stevie Wonder). Maxwell recorded some of the most ambitious R&B of his time, becoming wildly popular and often earning critical raves in the process. What was more, his recurring theme of romantic monogamy set him apart from the vast majority of his bump’n’grind lover-man contemporaries.

QR CODES

A QR (Quick Response) Code is a two-dimensional bar code intended to contain information which can be scanned quickly and easily by electronic devices. They are hugely popular in Japan and rapidly gaining popularity in the US but their use is much rarer here in the Denmark and South Africa. Particularly common are QR Codes that contain website links, directing your phone browser to a unique web page that is only discoverable via the codes. This will be one of the first times the technology has been fully used across a range of art events.

Anyone equipped with a camera phone and QR Code Reader software can scan a QR image and access the information it contains. Many new mobile phones come with this software already installed but nearly all camera phones have software available that's easily downloaded and installed.

Once installed the application will allow you to open your camera and take a photo of a code, then it will 'read' the code and present you with the results. In the case of website links it will usually display the website address and ask if you would like your phone browser to connect to the internet to access the online content. Try reading the QR Code at the top of this page to see how it works!
